Safe Cement Handling on Construction Site
Onsite safety support, risk management, and operational protocols for RAFTRACK AWOLOWO SITE.
Project Overview
Safe Cement Handling on Construction Site
Cement builds structures. But without care, it can damage your body. Cement is involved in almost every construction activity: mixing, block laying, plastering and concrete works. But remember: cement + water + skin = chemical burn.

Key Points & Safety Guidelines
Detailed Requirements & Measures
The 6 Main Hazards of Cement:
1. Skin Contact: Cement is alkaline. Wet cement can cause serious chemical burns.
2. Dust Inhalation: Breathing cement dust can irritate and damage the respiratory system.
3. Eye Contact: Cement entering the eyes can cause serious injury and, in severe cases, permanent eye damage.
4. Manual Handling: Carrying 50kg cement bags incorrectly can cause back injuries and muscle strain.
5. Slips: Spilled cement mixed with water can create very slippery surfaces.
6. Long-Term Exposure: Repeated contact can cause skin dermatitis, rashes and irritation.
Safety Rules for Cement Handling:
i. PPE IS MANDATORY - Wear gloves, long sleeves, safety goggles, appropriate dust mask/respirator and safety boots. PPE provides a barrier between your body and cement. Avoid bare hands and exposed skin.
ii. Avoid Direct Contact - Never put your hands directly into wet cement. Use proper tools and wear suitable waterproof gloves.
iii. Control Cement Dust - Avoid throwing or pouring cement in a way that creates unnecessary dust. Work in well-ventilated areas and use suitable respiratory protection where required.
iv. Lift Cement Bags Correctly - Do not bend your back while lifting. Bend your knees, keep the load close to your body and ask for assistance when the load is too heavy.
v. Maintain Good Housekeeping - Clean spilled cement and water immediately. Keep walkways clear to prevent slips, trips and falls.
In Conclusion: Cement is essential for construction, but your health and safety are more important. Wear your PPE, handle cement correctly, keep the workplace clean and report hazards immediately. Safety first, work safely and go home safely.
